HospiceCare of Southeast Florida (HCSEF) has been awarded a $100,000 grant from The Moyer Foundation to establish a model bereavement camp program called Camp Erin in Miami, FL. The Moyer Foundation funding will assist HCSEF in operating the weekend bereavement camp for the next 10 years. The Florida Marlins Community Foundation proudly supports Camp Erin - Miami. HospiceCare of Southeast Florida is pleased to partner with The Moyer Foundation to support children in the Miami-Dade community, who are grieving from the loss of someone in their lives. “Camp Erin is a wonderful outlet for children who have experienced the loss of a loved one to express their grief, bond with other children their age who understand the profundity of their loss and heal through creative therapies and newfound friendships,” said Lourdes Canete, HospiceCare of Southeast Florida Camp Erin Director. Camp Erin - Miami is held at Camp Owaissa Bauer in Homestead Florida, located at 17001 SW 264th Street Miami, FL 33031.
Camp Erin is an annual three day camp experience offered at no charge and facilitated by professional staff and trained volunteers of HospiceCare of Southeast Florida. The camp is for children from 6 to 17 years of age, who have experienced a death. Camp Erin combines a traditional high energy, fun camp activities with grief support and education. Adult “big buddy” volunteers offer support and companionship for campers. The camp provides a safe, caring environment and offers fun recreational activities and supportive discussions to help campers build trust, self esteem and coping skills. HospiceCare of Southeast Florida has 25 years of experience providing bereavement support to grieving children and adults. For the past 15 years, HCSEF has operated a bereavement camp called Camp Coral in Broward County. The Moyer Foundation selected HospiceCare of Southeast Florida as their Miami-Dade partner because of HCSEF's successful programming for bereaved children, teens and adults. Thanks to The Moyer Foundation grant, HCSEF is able to expand the non-profit hospice's bereavement programming in the Miami-Dade area. HospiceCare of Southeast Florida is a non-profit, community based hospice, serving Broward, Miami-Dade and Monroe Counties for over 25 years. The mission of HCSEF is to provide quality end of life care and education to individuals diagnosed with a life limiting illness along with supportive care to their loved ones, regardless of ability to pay. The Moyer Foundation was founded by MLB All-Star pitcher, Jamie Moyer and his wife, Karen. The Foundation's mission is to provide comfort and support to children enduring a time of profound physical, emotional or financial distress. With the community's support, The Moyer Foundation has raised more than $15 million to assist over 170 different programs and community initiatives that directly serve the needs of children in severe distress. In addition to supporting organizations through grants, The Moyer Foundation created and funds Camp Mariposa, for children affected by addiction, and Camp Erin, the largest national network of bereavement camps for children and teens. There are currently 28 camps in 18 states. The Moyer Foundation is collaborating with HCSEF for Camp Erin – Miami as a part of its national “Campaign for Kids” and hopes to bring Camp Erin to more than 50 cities nationwide. If you know of a child who could benefit from the Camp Erin experience, please contact Lourdes Canete, Camp Erin Director, at 305-599-7755 or lcanete@hospicecareflorida.org.
