Hospice Hundred, Inc. was founded in 1978 by Elaine Monson and a group of caring and concerned residents of Broward County with a firm desire to assure quality of life for our residents. Incorporated in June 1986, Hospice Hundred, Inc. is an all volunteer organization whose mission is to educate and inform the community of the hospice concept, develop financial resources to support HospiceCare of Southeast Florida, Inc. and to recruit the volunteers to accomplish these goals.
Hospice is a special way of caring for patients facing end of life and the decisions that must be made at a very important time. A medically directed program, hospice is designed to improve a patient’s quality of life while helping to alleviate the family’s distress, Hospice provides efficient loving care to eliminate pain, and ease the overall emotional, spiritual, social and economic stress at the end of life. The program’s interdisciplinary team of professionals and volunteers work closely with the family during the illness, and through the bereavement period which could be up to one year. Hospice services reach a broad segment of the population; this subject touches each and every one of us.
Through diverse educational and fundraising programs, Hospice Hundred makes a difference in many individual’s quality of life during a very difficult period. Hospice Hundred’s significant fund raising efforts began in 1979 and continue to provide funds to assure that all patients and families, regardless of age, diagnosis, race, or ability to pay have access to quality end of life care. Hosting numerous social events each year like the Red & White Martini Mixer in February, the 17th Street Causeway Bridge 5K Run in April, , and the Best of the Best Luncheon in the fall featuring men’s fashions modeled by prominent men in Broward County, Hospice Hundred has raised over $1,000,000 in support of HospiceCare of Southeast Florida, Inc.
The funds raised by Hospice Hundred, Inc. have been instrumental in assuring that hospice services are available to patients and their families, even when there is no source of reimbursement. The members have raised funds, and in kind donations, to help with establishing an inpatient unit at Broward General Medical Center; a pediatric inpatient unit at Broward General Medical Center for ages newborn to 21 years; the renovation and addition completed in early 2002 of Bougainvilla, a hospice residence for patients with no place to live or no one to care for them; Camp Coral, a bereavement camp, for children ages 6-13; the Forget Me Not Center, a community resource for grief and bereavement support to families, children and adults who have experienced a loss.
With the support of Hospice Hundred, Inc., HospiceCare of Southeast Florida, Inc. has been able to provide services for over 25,000 patient/families at home, in nursing homes, in adult living facilities, and in hospitals since 1981.
Only through the continued interest and support of the community can we be sure that Hospice Hundred, Inc. and HospiceCare of Southeast Florida, Inc. will be available when we need them.
