Departments of health and education will remain in government: Wahab – Pakistan

KARACHI: Administrator Karachi and Sindh government spokesman Barrister Murtaza Wahab said on Thursday that the government has decided that local government affairs should be handled by local bodies and that health and education would remain the responsibility of the provincial government.

Abbasi Shaheed Hospital and Karachi Medical and Dental College were not in good condition hence the government of Sindh decided to take care of them.

“We want these medical institutions to maintain high quality and provide services like NICVD and Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Center,” the administrator said while addressing a program on better use of public spaces hosted by CLICK at Safari Park here.

The process of transforming Karachi Medical and Dental College into a university is ongoing. He said that after obtaining university status, the problems of availability of grants and funds for this institution will automatically be resolved.

He asked citizens to notify areas where parks are in poor condition so that immediate action can be taken to improve them.

“We want to eliminate the negative image of the city. Parks and other recreational areas have been neglected in the past,” he added.

Also present at the occasion were Metropolitan Commissioner Syed Afzal Zaidi, Former Administrator Korangi Sajida Qazi, Director Imkaan Welfare Tahira Hassan, Development Specialist Aafia Salam, Director General of Parks Junaidullah Khan, Senior Director of Recreation Mansoor Qazi and other officials.

While a large number of students from University of Karachi, Karachi Medical and Dental College and other universities and colleges have participated in the program.

The Karachi administrator said safari parks and zoos are the assets of the city and people should use them. “Many public places in Karachi were built for the citizens, but due to deterioration, these open spaces have disappeared from the public eye,” he added.

Lawyer Murtaza Wahab said that 100 parks are being renovated in the central district, of which 14 parks have been opened and local people have been tasked to look after them. Kidney Hill Park is the best place in the world for which the whole team of Karachi Metropolitan Corporation deserves credit for their development.

He said they also started the Urban Forest project on the shores of Clifton and created a natural environment where birds from other places started coming.

“We need to protect and care for the trees that are planted the same way we care for our families so that we can deal with environmental issues,” he said.
