Sexual health education program in Dholpur, Rajasthan holds lessons for the whole nation

The state government simultaneously focused on their mental and physical health. Small investments at this critical time like this have the potential to shape the entire life of a person and a nation eventually.

In the area of health, the government has implemented a number of structural interventions within the framework of the RKSK. These include, for example, launching adolescent-focused ‘Ujala’ health clinics, distributing weekly iron and folic acid supplements, and ensuring easy availability of free sanitary napkins.

However, while these structural interventions are very important, their impact can only be fully felt if they are coupled with well-designed behavioral interventions that focus specifically on the sexual and reproductive health of these young people because often, even when these services become available, their use is low due, among other things, to social norms.

Evidence shows that knowledge levels of adolescents, even older ones, regarding sexual and reproductive health issues are low and often inaccurate, and that behavioral interventions have the power not only to inform but also to change relative behavior early pregnancy, gender norms and sexual health in general.

This period is associated with several changes that change the lives of these young people. If their concerns are not properly understood and addressed, it can lead to inappropriate behavior, depression, acceptance of sexual abuse, and even attempted suicide.

Although there are several places where these interventions can be carried out, schools represent a safe, reliable and effective space in which they can be offered. Before schools can be chosen as an effective place to convey these messages, however, there are a few obstacles that must be overcome, the most important being the concerns of teachers, parents and the community at large about the relevance of what type of education would be for these young minds and what effect it is likely to have.
